How to Choose the Right Size Autoclave – BLOG | CELITRON

11-04-2016

Autoclave machines come in such a wide variety of formats, footprints, and sizes today; it can be hard to know which size to purchase for your hospital facility or laboratory. Given that an autoclave is a fairly expensive piece of kit though, it’s important to consider carefully and make sure you’re getting the right one to meet your needs.

It’s a Question (or Three) of Size

Size should probably be the first of those considerations, so here are three questions to answer, which will help you to select the right-sized autoclave machine.

  • What are the volumes and sizes of load that you’ll need to sterilize at any one time?
  • How much floor space can you afford to give up to your new autoclave?
  • How big is the longest instrument or largest surgical pack that will need to undergo autoclaving?

By answering these three questions, you’ll have a good idea of the autoclave size that will best suit your facility. Remember too that if floor space is at a premium, you can always opt for one or more bench-top autoclave machines.

Three Questions – Zero Regrets

Once purchased, your new machine will be with you for a long time. If you’re careful to select the right size and footprint, you won’t spend the next few years wishing you’d picked a larger or smaller autoclave. That fact alone should justify the time and thought required to answer the three questions above.
